Nerves of Steel

Introduction

Kyren Wilson has had an unbelievable transformation for this year’s World Championship with many saying that his all round game is ready to achieve a World Championship title. I have tipped Wilson for the snooker big time for several years but for some reason there was a small piece missing from his articulate jigsaw. This now seems to have been added, thanks to the assistance of his coach Barry Stark and others.

The Finished Article

Kyren may have lost his semi-final match at the Crucible this year 12-17 to Shaun Murphy but he has nothing to be ashamed about. His run short of the final, has been spectacular, complete with impressive wins, big breaks, scoring heavily when needed and producing safety play when needed. Wilson is now the finished article and will produce a Triple Crown victory soon. Perhaps he fell short of the mark this year, was just because he was beaten by the winning line and Shaun Murphy won because he dug deep and called upon that strength that won him his first Crucible title.

I don’t believe that Wilson was haunted by last year’s final because the score line would have a wider margin than it was. The fact remains that Wilson dominated most of the match and wasn’t until Murphy smelled defeat, that he pushed his game into the next gear. The fist pump was the early sign of this, believing that he may have a chance of denying Kyren the chance of another final. Natural fatigue and a resurgent opponent, are not good forces to be faced with and Wilson floundered just short of the mark .

However this lad from Kettering will be back and snooker players are known to learn from their battle scars. Victory is sweet but defeat is bitter and Kyren will not gain comfort from how he has performed but additionally that Shaun may end up being a runner-up in the final as Wilson was last year. This is Shaun’s fourth World Championship final and he is hungry for success but that aim will only be revealed on Monday night.

Kyren Wilson has youth on his side and has plenty of time to produce the silverware we know he is capable of. Becoming World Champion is not a rapid process and requires patience. It is not an overnight process and requires endurance to sustain this seventeen-day marathon. He may meet Murphy or Selby in the final in the future but he will have had a lot more experience and that is what will create the ultimate victory along with the belief that he already has in abundance.
