Much has been said about men’s snooker in the media and on the internet but what about the women’s game ? Few outside the realms of snooker have heard of a female player let alone a game they have played in or a title won.
Unlike the male game, tournaments are played in lower key venues with coverage being restricted to streaming services and You Tube. Few would know or heard of Reanne Evans who has won the World Championship ten times and has even attempted to get on the main tour by playing in qualifiers but has narrowly missed the opportunity.
I admit that Women’s snooker is on a slow assent due largely to success by females in sports such as the England teams for cricket, football, hockey and rugby. However there is still a chasm between the two sexes, Mark Williams picked up a cheque for £250,000 for winning the World Championship whilst Ng On Yee won £6000.
To overcome such problems one really needs to tackle the route cause and this clearly underinvestment. Without major sponsors and television coverage, the female game will remain in the shadows and fail to achieve the true potential it deserves.
Just because someone is a woman, doesn’t mean they can’t compete with a man. If necessary, merge the two games and create a larger seedlings list, extend the 128 and you will allow so many stars to be born in the game.
Similarly, duplicate this at the youth level. By doing this, one will allow youth talent to flourish. Invest and develop!
The potential exists in this game but has to be managed correctly and nurtured. If done correctly, you will see highly talented , female players compete on match, televised events and win life changing money. If you don’t the historic waves of time will never drift away.
