Breaking the Ice

By Elliott West

“What a win sis, will be your first win of many”.

Marco Fu
Introduction

Hong Kong’s Ng On Yee has long been a dominant force on the Women’s Snooker Tour. Having won the IBSF World Snooker Championship and the World Women’s Snooker Championship on multiple occasions, it was only fitting that she was offered a two-year tour card on the main tour last year. A gifted player and instantly recognisable by her circular glasses, Ng has set off on a mission that few would have the courage to embark on but her steely nature is apparent in her game and despite defeats, she always gets up and dusts herself down for her next match.

A Break Through

After a non-eventful start to the season, Ng struck gold when she recently competed in the Welsh Open qualifiers. Playing Wu Yize, ranked 83, the player from Hong Kong notched up a 4-2 victory over the Chinese player, making breaks of 84 and 82 along the way. This maiden win opens the doors for her to play in the first round of the event, due to take part in its new home of Newport. In a tough draw, she will play Ali Carter but win or lose, it is definitely a major breakthrough.

With Marco Fu fighting her corner, this 31-year-old means business and threatens to topple the success of another female competitor, Reanne Evans who has defeated Thepchaiya Un-Nooh at the 2013 Wuxi Classic and Robin Hull in a World Championship qualifier five years ago. Reacting to the win and the praise heaped on her by Marco Fu, Ng commented. saying:

“Cheers Bro. Thanks for practicing with me and all the advice you gave me”.

Ng On Yee

This win is the result of serious hard work practicing and fine-tuning her game. Ng had already had several near wins this season, losing 5-4 to Craig Steadman at the German Masters and 4-3 to Shaun Murphy at the Scottish Open.

Her aim now is to build on this victory and to present a serious challenge to her opponents. Not an easy goal but entirely possible. This mild-mannered player with a broad smile certainly knows her way around a snooker table and when she travels to Newport for her first-round match, all eyes will be on her clash with Ali Carter. Perhaps one that should be shown on one of the television tables. We don’t have long to wait as the Welsh Open will run between 28 February – 06 March and will be shown live on Eurosport.
