An Uncertain Future

By Elliott West
Introduction

Local residents and even the owner of the Spot On Snooker Club in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire were stunned when they found out that their beloved club had been temporarily closed with a probable return date. This bustling market town is more used to the tranquillity of its surroundings and so found this news to be a rude awakening. Perched on the outskirts of Bulwell Forest, local members turned up to the club to play and were greeted with closed steel gates and an apology notice attached to them with a likely reopening date of the 27th October 2021.

A Nice Surprise

Behind the sting in the tail of its closure, members were pleasantly surprised to hear that the club was actually suddenly closed to undergo an exciting marketing and social media implementation with a spokesperson for Spot On Leisure releasing a press statement saying :

“The Bulwell club was not closed because of any financial or Covid-related issue but is undergoing an exciting marketing and social media implementation, as well as a restructured operation of the club.

The club will reopen with its normal trading hours on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at 10 am, and we look forward to seeing all our regular customers and any new customers that wish to come along and enjoy our facilities”.

In the meantime, those who can’t wait to play on the green baize will have to travel to the Hucknall Spot On Club a few miles away, where members of the Bulwell club will be warmly welcomed”.

Despite the reassurances from Spot On, there has still been a large amount of anger and disappointment amongst the local community of how the situation has been handled. Those who did turn up to face an ominous bicycle lock in their midst were already just recovering from Covid restrictions and felt so happy memories of this establishment were now turning sour as a result of being denied entrance. Not good at a time when many businesses in the country are suffering. A club that one resident beautifully described, saying:

“But Spot On here is a safe environment, the rules and regulations are fantastic, and the staff and management make you feel at home – I take my son who’s a teenager along with nephews and they feel safe there.”

Summary

It remains to be seen whether Spot On lives up to its promises surrounding this Bulwell snooker club but you say the jury is firmly out and reserves judgment for when this establishment finally opens its doors again, hearing once again the welcome noise of pool and snooker balls being potted, pints being poured and the warm reassurance of laughter and conversation.
