Introduction
Tributes have been flooding in following the sad news that the former Donegal snooker champion, John (Jack) McGranghan suddenly passed away at his Trusk Road home, aged 54 last Wednesday. A quiet and unassuming man, Jack as he was affectionately known, won a string of snooker titles across his county and was credited to be a fine player amongst his friends and colleagues. A man with amazing potting ability and was highly popular in the clubs and tournaments he played in.
A Natural Gift
Jack won titles across Donegal and beyond, the highlight of his career being when he was named Senior County Champion in 1996. He also won the ‘Joint Player of Snooker League Award’ the same year with his good friend, Donal Bonar. McGranaghan was also part of the ‘Twin Towns Snooker Club’ four-man team and was a pivotal player in helping them to win The Donegal Snooker League Championship and the Top 4 Shield on several occasions.
The Irishman was never shy in making a century break and notched number ton breaks during his career. His break being one of 131. A multitalented cueist, Jack also turned his hand to pool and along with Dan Deery and Matthew McAuley won the ‘Sweeney’s Bar 3 Man’ competition in the mid-1990s. He also won the Gambles team in the mid-1980s with Peter Walsh and Gerald McHugh.
